Grandaddy - The Sophtware Slump

"This is quite possibly the last great entry in the atmospheric pop canon" wrote Pitchfork in its review of The Sophtware Slump back in June of 2000. Pretty funny, considering that ever since, that genre has practically dominated their top albums of the year charts.

But I'm sure that at the time of the album's release—five full months before Radiohead's game-changing Kid A (Pitchfork's Album of the '00s and, essentially, its raison d'être)—it seemed like a prudent prognostication. With The Sophtware Slump, Grandaddy's Jason Lytle seemingly pulled off the be-all and end-all of atmospheric pop records, if there was ever to be such a thing.

No matter what its place is in the canon, it makes my list of Albums You Should Own purely for the sheer amount of times it carried me, and lifted me, through that last hour of work at the record store for many a nights.
