All-Star Tambourine Choir!

This happened a while back, so it's not exactly timely or relevant but I feel it should be documented in some way on this blog. So here you go:

On the evening of May 6th, 2008, on the stage of Smith's Old Bar in Atlanta, Georgia, the first and perhaps last legendary performance of Rebecca Loebe backed by the All-Star Tambourine Choir transpired.

What cause would bring these two powerful forces together?

It was all for the kids, of course.

That's right, this performance was part of the second annual 500 Songs For Kids event, a fundraiser for the Songs For Kids Foundation which this year put Rolling Stone magazine's 500 greatest sing-along songs of all time in the hands of 500 artists over the course of 10 nights. Some of the artists taking part in the marathon of performances were Arrested Development doing Bon Jovi’s “Livin’ on a Prayer,” Shawn Mullins taking on John Lennon’s “Imagine,” Angie Aparo singing Don McLean’s “American Pie” and Cee-Lo (half of Gnarls Barkley) performing the Beatles’ “Hey Jude.”

And when Atlanta's own premiere folk artist, Rebecca Loebe was entrusted with Carly Simon's "You're So Vain", she knew that it required a majestic arrangement to truly do it justice. Upon her beaconing call, a company of tambouriners was assembled to fulfill this burning missive. I was one of these lucky loose-wristed folks. Hence, the All-Star Tambourine Choir was born.

And so the tambourines played as the words were sang and the chords strummed.

And everyone saw that it was good. And now, so shall you:

All hyperbole aside, this was really fun and I hope to get the band back together some day for one more performance. Perhaps an original number with a tambourine solo could be written for such an occasion. Or maybe a "dueling tambourines" kinda thing.

So many possibilities....
